How To Lay Good Floating Hardwood Floors
Floating hardwood floors are extremely versatile, in that they can be installed above virtually any kind of sub-floor. This is because the hard wood itself does not actually touch or make contact with the floor. Nevertheless, there are a few essential considerations which will determine the quality of result you can expect when you come to lay your floor. The first step is to thoroughly clean the sub-floor on which the hardwood floor will be built. Then, more importantly, the surface must be made to be even.
In the vast majority of cases, this will not be a problem, as the floor will be even anyway. A very slight warping will not cause any serious difficulty, but it must be very slight. You can test that the floor is level by laying a piece of board which you know to be level on top of the surface and seeing if any gaps appear. The use of a spirit level is not really recommended, as you will be testing too large an area for the result to be meaningful.
What you can do is test the piece of board that you are using to test the floor with a spirit level, just to make completely sure that the surface is indeed completely level. If it is, it will be the best tool for testing the floor. To tell whether there are gaps of any significant size, it is best to use a very dim light, and then to make sure that you use a bright light on the other side of the board. This should allow you to see any clear gaps in between the board and the floor.
Floating hardwood floors definitely need a flat surface, so if there is any significant gap in the existing floor, use a joint compound on the floor until it is level. Again, the use of very dim and bright light will give you the best estimate possible of where the compound needs to be, and how much of it you need to create the level surface. Because the floor does not touch the surface underneath, it can be laid in any direction you choose.
It is common to choose the direction in which light typically enters and flows through the room, although if the room only has one door it is also common to start at the point where people enter the room. The hardest part of laying a floating hardwood floor is in attaching the planks of wood to each other. This is usually accomplished using wood glue, so it is vitally important to make sure that you hold the wood level and in position until the glue has dried and the joint is set. If you can take enough care over this step, you can be successful at laying effective floating hardwood floors.
