How To Apply Hardwood Floor Cleaner To Preserve Your Hardwood Floor
Hardwood floor cleaner should only be applied after any surface dirt has been removed, otherwise permanent deep scratching may occur, and if a finish is applied, dirt can even become trapped in that. Hardwood floors are extremely durable and resistant to foreign bodies, but you still need to maintain and look after them if they are to retain their appearance over many years. Once you have your cleaning routine established, you will find that you can follow the same procedure every time, and it will soon become second nature.
The most important initial considerations are to ensure that stones and grit are removed at the very start, and to ensure that there are no staples or nails protruding from the surface. It is best to minimize the amount of grit which gets on the floor in the first place by having good floor mats positioned at the entry to the room. Make sure everyone who visits gets into the habit of wiping their shoes thoroughly before they enter. Prevention is always better than cure. The nails and staples should only need attending to once. Pull out any staples which were used to keep carpets in place, and make sure that floor nails are hammered down so that their heads are beneath the surface.
The first step in the cleaning process, before you even think about applying a hardwood floor cleaner, should be a three step clean of dirt from the floor surface. Firstly, use a very soft brush to remove most of the surface dust and dirt. Make sure that this brush will leave no scratch or scuff marks. Once this is done, use a damp floor mop, but keep it as dry as you possibly can. Water is the main enemy of hardwood flooring.
Finally, use a powerful vacuum cleaner which can remove any remaining dust without applying friction to the floor. At this stage, the floor will be clean enough for you to apply your hardwood floor cleaner. A floor detergent needs to be selected with care, and for hardwood floors you should be using one with neutral acidity. Be very careful in the application of any liquid to a hardwood floor, as any liquid getting into the seams of the floor can cause permanent damage.
The one really difficult aspect of keeping a floor in good condition is maintaining the parts which are inevitably more walked upon than others, to retain an even and consistent finish. This can only be accomplished by taking the time and the care to notice when a certain area of the floor appears to be worn, and then gently applying more of the finish to that area. This will not need to happen very often, but you will need to do this from time to time to maintain a perfectly even floor. Most of the time, you can keep your floor in prime condition with regular use of hardwood floor cleaner.
