How To Rejuvenate Your Floor Effectively With Hardwood Floor Sanding

Hardwood floor sanding can breathe new life into your tired old floor, and can save you a fortune on the expense of having a new floor fitted. Unlike the job of installing a brand new hardwood floor, the job of sanding is one which can be taken on by anyone with a reasonable degree of practical skill. It is vital that you take care over this job, as making a mistake which damages the floor beyond repair will prove to be very expensive indeed. Your hardwood floor is an asset which adds value to your home, and it needs to be looked after and treated with respect.

If you are ready to take on the job of sanding your hardwood floor, you will need to get hold of a sanding machine. You should be able to find a local rental shop where you can borrow a machine for a short period of time. Before you even take this step, you will need to prepare the floor so that you can use the machine as soon as you get it home. The first step is obviously to remove any furniture, and anything else which stands on the floor and will block access to it. You will also need to move anything which hangs over the floor and obstructs it.

Make sure that the floor is clean before you sand it. Loose stones or grit can combine with sandpaper to leave deep scratches in the wood, so be careful in making sure that the surface is clean. Use a soft brush, followed by a dry mop, and then use a vacuum cleaner after that to ensure that all dirt is removed. Nails and staples in the floor can also cause trouble, so be sure to remove these, or hammer the nails in so that their heads are beneath the surface of the wood.

The actual process of hardwood floor sanding needs to be carried out in stages, with progressively finer grades of sandpaper being used in each application. It is essential to clean the floor again after each successive grain of sandpaper is used. This is not a job you can hurry if you want the best results. Take your time, and you will be amply rewarded with a floor which will look as good as new. Once you have completed the sanding, you need to decide whether or not to apply wood stain to add to the finish and effect of the wood.

Applying the polyurethane finish will be the final step in rejuvenating your floor. It may take more than one layer of this before you will be satisfied with the result, so be sure to allow enough time for one application to dry before you carry out the next one. Leave the floor for a couple of days at least before you start to bring your furniture back in. Despite the inconvenience, this will prove to be more than worth it. You will have added value to your property again through effective hardwood floor sanding.
