How To Refinish Hardwood Floors In Complete Safety

How to refinish hardwood floors? This is a question which is often asked by people who have just brought in some new furniture, only to find that it does not fit in with the old floor which has been taken for granted for so many years. It is also often asked by people who are just feeling bored with the tired old look of their home, and are seeking to give it a new enhanced appearance. The job of refinishing is not an especially difficult one, and anyone who has a reasonable degree of skill in do-it-yourself should be able to succeed.

The first important preparation is to clear the room of any furniture or fitting which will get in the way of your refinishing operation. It is best to clear the room completely if you can, rather than trying to do the job in two halves. This is something you will need to plan in advance, as you will need to have enough space to store the furniture in the meantime without it impacting on the rest of your life to any great degree.

Once you have cleared the room, you can begin preparing the floor for the job to be carried out,. The first preparation step is to make sure the floor is clear of staples and nails. If you have had carpets fitted at any time, there may be remaining staples which will need to be removed. If there are nails which are protruding above the surface, they will need to be hammered down so that they do not affect the sanding machine.

Clean the floor, and clean it thoroughly. Use a soft brush, making sure it doesn't scratch the surface. Follow this with a vacuum cleaning, which will remove most of the dust and anything which is loose. You will then have to use a damp mop to clear off anything which is still stuck to the floor, but make sure you use as little water as possible. The one piece of equipment you need in refinishing hardwood floor surfaces is a sander, and these can be hired from a local rental shop.

Use the sander with progressively lighter grades of sandpaper, to produce the best finish possible. You will need to take a bit of time and a bit of care over this, but the results will be well worth it. Make absolutely sure that the floor is clean before each application of new sandpaper. If you don't, you could be sanding grit into the surface. When the floor has been thoroughly sanded, you can apply any stain, and the you are ready for the finish. A polyurethane finish will need two or three days to dry before you can bring your furniture back into the room. Patience is an important lesson when learning how to refinish hardwood floors.
